Density is defined as the mass per unit volume of a substance. It is considered as one of the most important properties used in the identification of substances. The density measuring instrument is used in many industries. In plastic industry, the instrument is used to determine the density of plastic materials, which in turn is used to identify the type of plastic.

Test Method

The apparatus determines density of plastic materials from relative densities of substances. The equipment determines the relative densities between two types of plastics by comparing them.

A type of plastic with low relative density will float on top of a liquid in comparison with the other plastic having a higher relative density. If the density of the liquid is lowered, it could lead to a point where the density of both the types of plastics is similar. The density of the plastics can be thus be derived by measuring the density of the liquid in which the types of plastics are suspended.
