A
function generator is
an electronic test device that is commonly used to generate electric
waveforms. The waveforms generated by these generator can be either
repetitive, or single-shot, which requires some kind of internal or
external activating source.
It is capable of generating different types of voltage patterns at
various amplitudes and frequencies. Response of a circuit to common
input signals can also be tested using these generator.
Salient Features
- Function generator system includes hookup cable and instruction
manual.
- These generators can be analog or digital.
- Analog function generators usually generate a triangle waveform,
which serves as the basis for all of its other outputs.
- Like most signal generators, function generators may also consist
of an attenuator and various means of modulating the output
waveform.
- These generators often have the ability to automatically and
repetitively sweep the frequency of the output waveform between two
operator-determined limits.
- It consist of in-built frequency counters to accurately display
and set output frequencies.
Applications
These widely used in many fields. Some of their application areas are:
- Research Works
- Audio & video equipment test
- Frequency response testing
- Evaluation of digital timing
- Time domain analysis of amplifiers and comparators
- Design & service applications
