Pycnometers are glass or
metal containers with a precisely determined volume that are used to
determine the
specific gravity of sand, soil, or powdery
material having granules size smaller than 10mm. Pycnometers can also be
used in determining the
density of the solid phase in a porous
solid, but the sample must first be crushed, ground, or powdered to the
point that all pores are opened.
Specification
Consists of a 1kg glass jar with brass cone, rubber seal and locking
ring.
Spare : It includes a rubber seal provided in a storage box.
Working Principle of Pycnometer
The pycnometer method is based on the determination of the volume of a
known mass of soil by the fluid displacement method. The density of
solid particles is determined from the mass and volume of the soil.
Application
Pycnometer is mainly used to determine specific gravity of sand, soil,
etc. Some of the areas, where it finds application are :
- Soil Analysis
- Battery
- Pharmaceuticals
- Ceramics
