The apparatus is mainly used to
compare the heat softening properties of polyethylenes and other
thermoplastics. The equipment can also be used to perform some basic
tests on thermoplastic compounds to establish their physical properties.
The equipment is widely used in chemical and industrial enterprises, and
is largely applied to thermo distortion analysis and Vicat softening
point of various materials including plastic, rubber and nylon.
The Vicat softening temperature is defined as the temperature at which
a flat-ended needle penetrates the specimen to the depth of 1 mm under a
specific load.
Salient Features
- The apparatus consists of a temperature regulated oil bath.
- The oil bath is provided with a flat ended needle penetrator
mounted to record the extent of penetration on a gauge.
- The specimen is placed with the needle resting on the bath.
- The temperature of the bath is elevated at the rate of 50° C
per hour or 120° C per hour.
Applications
There are various applications of Vicat softening point apparatus. Some
of it's common applications are in:
- Chemical Industries
- Industrial Enterprises
- Plastic Industries
